Friday at the Red Bull Ring leaves many open questions about Ferrari. The Reds of Hamilton and Leclerc paid a large margin to Mercedes on a relatively short track, making them the fourth force behind McLaren and Red Bull. As also emerges from the analysis of the telemetry, a large part of the gap is certainly due to the choice to go with a very conservative engine mapping in the first two free practice sessions, to which a few kilos of petrol must be added for the qualifying simulation. In terms of race pace, however, tire management appeared more critical than its rivals, with times going up more clearly despite a cooler set (especially in parallel with Kimi). Despite appearing rather calm in public, a certain dissatisfaction was evident in the Ferrari garage, with the Cavallino technicians perplexed not so much by the degradation of the tires, but by the inability to perform in aggressive track conditions and temperatures as they had been in Barcelona. Fundamental Simulator Pilots have not had any major complaints about the balance and this makes it not easy to find the right corrections. For this reason, yesterday evening and until late at night, very intense work was carried out on the simulator in Maranello with Antonio Giovinazzi. We’ll see if any encouraging signs arrive in the final free practice sessions.
