Horner at the center of the market Since what emerged at Silverstone, in the guise of a simple enthusiast and spectator, the already considerable rumors about Christian Horner’s future have increased tenfold. The former Red Bull team principal currently remains a luxury ‘pensioner’, but has already made it clear several times that he does not rule out a return to the Circus at all. The English manager – one of the most successful in the history of F1 – has already been approached by half the grid: from Alpine, with the purchase of a minority share, to the hypothesis of the BYD project as the 12th team; from the Ferrari suggestion, also fueled by his friend Bernie Ecclestone, to Aston Martin which continues to spend monstrous sums and disappoint. The Silverstone team, which given the deep crisis situation in which it finds itself could perhaps be one of those that could benefit most from Horner’s management and organizational experience, seemed like an option to be excluded due to the presence of Adrian Newey. The brilliant English designer, who is currently also team principal of Aston Martin, worked with Horner in Red Bull for 20 years, creating two incredible winning cycles with the Austro-English team but had apparently parted ways with his former ‘boss’ in an apparently rather stormy manner. Some recent shots, however, seem to show a clear rapprochement between the two. Suspicious encounters? Horner and Newey were seen chatting for a long time on the grid and in the Silverstone paddock and were also immortalized by Netflix’s cameras, which will almost certainly include the meeting between the two in some episode of the next season of Drive to Survive. But the two former Red Bulls didn’t limit themselves to greetings on the track. A photo published on Instagram by Adrian Newey’s wife, Amanda, on July 8, revealed an afternoon spent in the Wimbledon stands by Newey, Horner, David Coulthard and their respective families. A ‘revival’ of the old days in Red Bull, probably, given that Coulthard drove from 2005 to 2008 for the Milton Keynes team, but also evidence of how evidently the relationships between Horner and Newey are not as cold as they are described, on the contrary. Amanda’s ‘role’ It should not be forgotten that Newey’s wife, Amanda, has always had a central role in her husband’s career choices and has never given up on intervening in some delicate situations in Newey’s career. It was she who had ranted on social media at the beginning of 2024 against an interview in which Horner seemed to somehow ‘belittle’ Newey’s centrality in the Red Bull projects and she had also ‘played’ a lot on social media with photos and allusions in the period in which the English engineer was disputed between Ferrari and Aston Martin. The hypothesis that is gaining ground is this: Lawrence Stroll would like to reform the pair of successful Red Bulls, returning Newey to the ‘simple’ role of designer, therefore rejecting the experiment of having him as team principal, and instead bringing on board an old fox like Horner to manage the entire ‘political’ part of the sport. For now these are only hypotheses and a simple photo on Instagram cannot be enough to provide certain answers, but Aston Martin certainly needs a profound shake-up and Horner could be the ideal person to provide it. Especially if previous differences between him and Newey have actually been resolved.
