Leclerc’s turning point After fifth place in the Sprint, imagining a triumphant Leclerc on the top step of the podium at Silverstone in the Sunday race was truly an exercise in great creativity or blind trust towards the Monegasque driver.
Yet at the end of the Sprint Leclerc seemed to have clear ideas, so much so that he evoked a change that he defined as “rather radical” which could have changed not only the weekend, but also his approach in the subsequent races.
And it couldn’t have gone any better, given that the Monegasque said he had rediscovered his lost feeling: second in qualifying and then winner of the grand prix. What did Charles change on the SF-26? After going unbalanced by talking about a radical change, Leclerc had already toned down his words after qualifying. And he did the same thing after the victory, in the press conference: “When I talk about a philosophical change, I’m referring more to small details that adapt a little better to my driving style in a certain phase of the curve. I don’t want to go into too much detail. But these are just some things that I noticed in the data on Friday evening and I said to myself: “Ok, these could be aspects that simply don’t adapt to my driving style”. We changed those few things between the sprint race and qualifying and the result was definitely better.” Leclerc then concluded, happy to have trusted his instincts: “I was very proud of the work we did to get to this result, because I think this type of change isn’t really that clear-cut. It’s not enough to look at the data and say: ‘My God, ok, this is what we need to change’. It’s a mix of intuition and sensation. Then we tried it and it was actually a very successful direction for me. I was very happy about it.”
