Andrea Stella had promised an entirely new McLaren between Miami and Montreal and he kept his word. The second part of the first evolutionary package arrives in Canada on the MCL40, renewing itself especially in the bottom, bonnet and front wing. The wing itself caused too much trouble in the only free practice session, prompting the team to put the update aside, at least for now. Doubts about the front wing The most eye-catching new feature on Montreal’s MCL40 is the front wing, which has been significantly revised compared to the launch version. The profiles follow a completely different trend, especially as regards the upper elements, demonstrating a new approach to the flows directed towards the rest of the single-seater. Furthermore, on the new version, the mobile flaps extend up to the endplate bulkheads, maximizing the reduction of straight-line resistance. McLaren tested the innovation in the only free practice session, but found its performance below expectations. For the Sprint qualifications the Woking team thus decided to return to the previous configuration, but it is too early to talk about a definitive failure, as emerges from Norris’ comments regarding the update package: “It seemed good, but some things perhaps were a bit in question and probably we need some time to re-analyse, especially considering that it is a very atypical circuit. The grip is very low and you bounce between the curbs, which is why you don’t have a fully representative picture and it’s difficult correlate with the wind tunnel. For some parts we need a little more time and we will probably reintroduce them next weekend or in Barcelona”. Furthermore, during the free practice session, Oscar Piastri stalled several times when braking, with the team suggesting that the Australian manually close the front wing earlier than the braking point. It is difficult to say whether this problem also arises from the new front wing, but what is certain is that its shelving limits the effectiveness of the other innovations. In fact, McLaren has developed its package in an organic way, in which each modification is designed to work in synergy with the others, including the new wing. The other developments In any case, the updates on the MCL40 are not limited to the front end. The world champions also refined the flow conveyors in the entry section of the bottom, whose philosophy had changed with the Miami package, taking inspiration from that of Ferrari. McLaren has retouched the shape of the five vertical elements, also aligning the bridge structures placed between the various bulkheads, all with the aim of improving the quality and energy of the flow under the bottom. Another notable innovation is the bonnet, where two side openings appear for the evacuation of hot air. The world champions were thus able to narrow the vent at the rear of the single-seater, limiting the amount of heat expelled to the rear axle, all to the benefit of aerodynamic cleanliness and the performance of the diffuser. In the same area the team retouched the fairings of the rear suspension arms and their coupling with the bodywork, favoring the flow of flows on the sides of the gearbox. The Woking team also retouched the rear wing, already updated for the Miami stage. What changes this time is the endplate bulkhead, on whose external surface the grain that diverts the flows upwards has been enlarged. Finally, in the passenger compartment area, a flap appears on the crown of the halo, a solution already widespread on ground effect cars. Canada’s difficulties Looking at the gap made up by the Mercedes on Friday in Canada, one would think that the updates were not enough to allow the McLarens to keep up with the Silver Arrows. However, it must be taken into account that Montreal is not a friendly track for the Woking single-seaters, transmitting little energy to the tires and limiting the effectiveness of the MCL40 in managing overheating and degradation. Furthermore, the starting set-up for the weekend was far from optimal and forced the team to take action for the Sprint qualifying. It is therefore early to despair in Woking, even if to keep world hopes alive no further uncertainties in development will be allowed.
