F1: rules chaos, but what will happen in 2027? With intellectual honesty, it is difficult not to describe as ‘a great mess’ what the FIA and F1 are having in their hands to develop the regulations for 2026 and the next few years.
Corrective measures arrived during the current season – and it was never ruled out that further ones could be implemented – and last May 8th it was triumphantly announced that an agreement had been reached between all the parties involved to arrive at a 60:40 split in the ratio between thermal and electric from 2027.
However, in the Canadian paddock a not so serene and clear-cut scenario emerged, given that several engine engineers would have resisted, as would many teams. Various issues were reported as problematic, from the implementation of the ADUO with the design of a different power unit for next year, to the issue of increasing costs, up to the issue of tanks and chassis that many teams had hoped to bring with them from 2026 to 2027. Fewer laps in 2027: what is known? The many discussions behind the scenes would have led the FIA - according to what was reported by Auto, Motor und Sport – to backtrack, to find a compromise acceptable to FOM, motorists and teams.
Two stages of news: in 2027 a moderate increase in fuel flow and a reduction in the number of GP laps, in 2028 the transition to the 60:40 ratio between thermal and electric, initially indicated for next year. Many have been alarmed by the possibility of reducing the number of GP laps. Let’s clarify straight away: here too this is a non-radical change. No Sprint encores and no halving of the race time to accommodate the reduced ability to keep the attention of the new generations high.
The proposal put forward by the team principals was the following: to allow the current chassis and tanks to be used also for the 2027 season, given the increase in fuel flow and therefore consumption, it was hypothesized that in some selected races the total number of laps could be shortened by 1 or 2, limiting the formation laps to 1 to join the starting grid.
This is the proposal on the table of the FIA, which at the moment does not seem to encounter great opposition. Click here to add Formula Passion as your favorite source on Google Discover: you will find our content more easily!
