Mercedes back on top
There Mercedes in Australia it has once again become the master of Formula 1, finding itself at the top of both world championship rankings for the first time since the 2021 season. The Circus, however, seems to have entered a situation identity crisiswith the new technical regulations which immediately triggered a storm of protests among Circus enthusiasts, in particular the older ones who did not seem to have appreciated this new twist on the style series ‘Electric Mario Kart’.
As the consummate motorsport politician that he is, Toto Wolff presenting the weekend of the Chinese GP he tried to give a shot at the circle and one at the barrel, showing closeness to the fans of the Circus without however turning his back on the new regulation which he celebrated in Melbourne and which is producing decidedly auspicious results for the silver arrows.
The Toto-thought
“Melbourne has been an intense first race weekend with these new regulations – declared the Austrian manager – and it gave many emotions. As always when there is a big change, there are aspects to change and improve and some negativity to overcome, but it is part of the process and it is important to listen to the fans and understand what is important to them. There was a lot of battle between the various teams. As the teams gain more knowledge and the teams converge, I am confident that the situation will also improve. Our goal is to do the work necessary to be in this fight at the top.”.
But beware if you tell Wolff that Mercedes is a cut above the competition: “We faced several challenges in Australia, which was to be expected with such new cars. The team handled them well and overcame them to get the result we wanted. We learned a lot and improved a lot and we will try to do so in China too. As it is a Sprint weekend with only an hour of testing, it will be even more difficult to fine-tune the car before the first competitive session. Last weekend we saw a close fight at the top with Ferrari – added the silver arrows boss – and there are several other teams that haven’t shown their full potential yet, so we know we’re in for a real battle“.
