Hybrid used car sales are continuing to climb as Australians seek vehicles that balance everyday practicality with reduced running costs and emissions, according to the latest Automotive Insights Report (AIR) from the Australian Automotive Dealer Association (AADA) and AutoGrab.
The October 2025 report shows 206,503 used vehicles were sold during the month, up 2.8% on September.
AADA chief executive James Voortman says hybrid demand has accelerated sharply over the past two years.
“Used hybrid sales have more than doubled in the last two years, rising from 6,868 in October 2023 to 14,784 vehicles this month,” Voortman says.
“Consumers are clearly looking for practical options that deliver lower running costs and emissions without compromising on convenience. Hybrid vehicles are offering that middle ground with a proven technology that suits everyday driving and reflects growing environmental awareness.”
Hybrid listings have also lifted, rising 21.1% month-on-month as supply improves and confidence in the segment grows.
While used electric vehicle sales rose 7.9%, hybrids recorded the strongest growth of any powertrain, outpacing petrol and diesel options. Total listings eased 3.9% to 325,018, with dealers accounting for just over half of all sales.
“We’re seeing a diverse market where buyers are weighing all their options,” Voortman says.
“Australians are purchasing vehicles that best suit their needs, whether that’s a hybrid for daily efficiency, a diesel for towing, or an electric vehicle, but there’s a definite trend toward more sustainable choices,” he says.
SUVs remained the most popular segment, making up more than 43% of all used-car sales.
Key findings from the October 2025 AIR:
• National used-car sales rose 2.8% to 206,503 units.
• Active listings fell 3.9% to 325,018.
• Used hybrid sales increased 37.3% month-on-month and almost 50% year-on-year.
• Used EV sales climbed 7.9% to 3,231 vehicles.
• SUVs accounted for more than 43% of all sales.
