The words of the McLaren team principal
There McLaren after just two race weekends it already has 80 points late against Mercedes in the Constructors’ standings. The team principal of the Woking team Andrea Stella, in fact, underlined this aspect in the press conference when asked whether it is particularly negative for McLaren not to have collected data in light of the double retirement in China of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri before the start of the GP.
“The most damaging aspect of not being able to participate in this race is the points lost in the championship – highlighted Stella – at the moment Mercedes seems to be in a category of its own and we are a little closer to Ferrari, obviously we race with the ambition of competing for important results and at the moment we are losing ground. These points could have been important at the end of the season.”
Regarding the process of understanding the MCL40, Stella believes that the weekend in Australia and the Sprint in China have already been ‘exhaustive’: “We’re learning pretty quickly – he added – we think we are in a good position now, especially in terms of exploiting the power units. More data would certainly have been very useful, but what we regret most is not having obtained the points for the championship.”
