An unexpected victory At the end of a Sprint that didn’t go as he hoped, Charles Leclerc explained that he had something in mind to turn his weekend around and magically found the path he had lost in the last few races. The Monegasque qualified second and with a masterful start took the lead at the British GP. Of course, Antonelli’s troubles – who could have closed the gap with 10 lap fresher tires – helped, but Leclerc deserved this great victory.
The final Safety Car, with the uncertainty about a valid last lap – which later didn’t happen – had infuriated Charles, so much so that it pushed team principal Frederic Vasseur to open up on the radio and say: “Charles, let’s calm down!”. Leclerc’s radio team after the finish line Bryan Bozzi: “And it’s P1. Difficult moments don’t last forever. Only strong people resist”
Charles Leclerc: “Yes!!! Come on! Finally, this time was particularly beautiful, although I would have preferred a slightly more normal ending. But the hard work paid off. And as you said, difficult moments don’t last forever. Only strong people resist! Once again, great work, and thank you, thank you all. Thanks to Andrea, to Johannes. The feeling is… it was better today too, so… Thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Bryan Bozzi: “That’s right, Charles. A really nice message. Thanks. In the pitlane stop on the P1 table eh!”
Charles Leclerc: “For heaven’s sake, it’s not that often that we do P1, I won’t make a mistake, don’t worry!”. Charles’ words upon arrival “It’s incredible, unfortunately the end wasn’t what I would have dreamed of. But I won after the last particularly difficult weekends, after all the work I put in to find the feeling with the car. I found something between Sprint and Qualifying and today I had to confirm it. The feeling is back where it should be. I’m incredibly happy. Here I put everything together and I hope to continue like this. Thanks to the team for the work done.”
