The battle over ADUO While Formula 1 partially calls into question the foundations of the new regulation, which started off in an unconvincing manner especially in qualifying, the teams are starting to think about the developments allowed by ADUO, the mechanism that helps engine engineers in crisis to develop their own power unit. The decision of the engine engineers who will benefit from the first aid on the power unit side after the Miami GP and for the next few months is up to the FIA, and naturally attempts have already begun to influence the Federation, or at least to put pressure on it. Mercedes, for example, believes that Ferrari should not have development aid, because according to Toto Wolff the ADUO is a tool that must only serve to close the gap, not to create others. Wolff’s words “In my opinion, there is an engine manufacturer that has a problem and we have to help him,” said the Austrian, evidently referring to Honda. “But then everyone else is more or less in the same situation. I would therefore be very surprised, and disappointed, if the ADUO’s decisions were to interfere with the current hierarchy.” “The principle of the ADUO was to allow teams at a disadvantage to catch up, not to overtake the others,” he added. “It must be absolutely clear that, whatever decision is made and whichever team gets an ADUO, any decision could have a major impact on the championship if it is not made with absolute precision, clarity and transparency. We have precise data, derived from our own internal analysis, on the performance of our competitors’ engines. I believe the FIA is examining the same data and, certainly, I hope that it continues to see itself as committed to protecting the integrity of the sport.”
