How many problems Between crash tests barely passed after various attempts and the absence (the only team not to show up) from the collective shakedowns in Barcelona, it was clear from this winter that the first part of the season for Williams would be an ordeal. In China, making the most of other people’s troubles, Carlos Sainz managed to collect the first two points of the season, but in general the Grove team – a surprise fifth last year among the Constructors – has so far had to content itself with sailing at the tail end of the group. The cancellation of the races scheduled for April in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, however, came to the benefit of the historic English team which – as also recently confirmed by Alex Albon – will present itself at the beginning of May in Miami with a car full of new features. The priority is a ‘slimming diet’ for the FW48 which, according to rumors reported by the Spanish newspaper Marca, would be even 26 kilos overweight compared to the limit allowed by the technical regulations. The season begins in Florida In reality, what we will see in Florida will not be a B version of the single-seater that has raced so far but the ‘real’ A version, that is, the one with the chassis that was expected to be used since the beginning of the season in Melbourne and which instead had been put on standby after the many winter problems. The Miami event will only be a first step in a long journey which should continue with updates – according to reports from the Spanish media – until the beginning of September with the Italian GP. The hope, which we will have to see if it turns into reality, would be to recover about a second of weight alone between Miami and Monza. If this were to happen, Williams could make an important leap forward among the mid-group teams, although it should not be forgotten that other teams also have cars that are currently overweight and far from perfect and therefore they too will probably improve their performance as the Grands Prix go by.
