Twelve years and beyond Currently the president of the International Federation has a four-year mandate and can be re-elected twice. The maximum number of years in government is therefore set at twelve, a rule added to the statute by Jean Todt during his presidency which lasted from 2009 to 2021. The current head of the motorsport governing body, Mohammed Ben Sulayem – as reported by the BBC – would have proposed eliminating the term limit, potentially making the FIA president re-eligible for life. This is not just an idea but a real plan to amend the statute, which will be discussed and voted on during the FIA General Assembly which will be held on June 26th in Macau. Why abolish the mandate limit? An FIA spokesperson told the BBC that the proposal was made to equalize the length of the presidential term with that already in place for world councils and the general assembly. However, the British newspaper pointed out that other federal roles, such as the president of the anti-doping committee or the person responsible for the F1 budget cap, have mandate limits.
President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been in office since 2021 and was re-elected – the only candidate – in 2025. Click here to add Formula Passion as your favorite source on Google Discover: you will find our content more easily!
