Engine development will be the dominant theme of the coming months. The point of reference is Mercedes, with a power unit whose qualities go beyond the simple increase in the compression ratio, a solution favored by the ambiguities of the regulation. Ferrari is hoping for ADUO to catch up, the award of which will not be based simply on absolute power. The concessions will also be of great importance with a view to 2027, when the modifications to the power units which are not free from complications will debut, as explored in depth by Federico Albano and Carlo Platella in the new episode of Thursday’s Engineers. The run-up to Mercedes In all likelihood, the Brixworth engines will be the point of reference for the ADUO. The Mercedes power unit is immediately associated with the solution relating to the compression ratio, the benefits of which are unlikely to be eroded by the new hot measurement test. In addition to this, however, the star manufacturer has also done an excellent job in interpreting the new regulations, which have changed the combustion in the cylinders quite a bit, despite the architecture being the same as in past seasons. The competition is hoping for ADUO, the mechanism which, in addition to guaranteeing the approval of extra updates, will ensure extra hours for bench tests and relief from the budget cap. The FIA explained that the ranking will not be based solely on absolute power, but at the same time that the mathematical formula will not take into account design choices that deliberately sacrifice the performance of the combustion engine. Ferrari is waiting to find out which class it will fall into, aware of a technical delay which in any case is difficult to attribute to bio fuel. Meanwhile, in Miami Leclerc adopted an interesting technique to manage the restart after the Safety Car, decidedly different from the one that Mercedes had put into practice in Suzuka. Intertwining with 2027 The ADUO award will be doubly important, as the extra development opportunities will help better prepare for power unit changes for next year. The new distribution between thermal and electrical power will improve the situation, but will introduce a whole series of complications. The increase in the flow of petrol will require larger tanks or shorter races, which would flatten single stop strategies, while, without interventions, the hybrid part risks becoming a very expensive ballast. The questions outweigh the answers at the moment, forcing the ADUO ruling to be left for posterity.
