McNish Binotto’s right-hand man The weekend in Miami was one to forget for Audi. The four-circle team has still suffered from those technical problems that are slowing down its mileage on the track, the speed of development in the factory (clearly very precious data is missing) and its progress in the constructors’ classification, with Williams moving up to +3. However, a new page opened in Florida: it was the first GP as racing director for Allan McNish, former F1 driver with Toyota and long-time collaborator of the German company. The Scotsman retraced the moments that led him to the wall of the F1 team and the call from Mattia Binotto, defining it as the classic proposal that could not be refused. McNish’s words “When I retired from racing, I said I would never get involved in team management or anything else again. The reality is that things change, life changes. Never say never in life. I have known and been involved in the Audi project since day 1, covering different roles, and seeing the car race in Melbourne was special”, this is McNish’s comment. “When I received Mattia’s phone call and I went to talk about it, my answer was obvious, precisely because I have lived this project from day one. Why should I refuse?”, he added. “Miami was definitely a learning game for me. There’s no doubt about it, I understood exactly how all the different parts fit together. Now that I’m a little clearer, we can sit down and try to improve.”
