The big scare The most important news is that Ollie Bearman is well – as he himself confirmed a few days ago – and that he will be on track regularly at the beginning of May for the Miami GP. The terrible accident in which he was involved in Suzuka, in which he had to ‘dodge’ Franco Colapinto’s car which was proceeding much more slowly in front of him, is still controversial. That misunderstanding, generated by two cars that were in opposite phases of battery use and found themselves one behind the other with a speed difference of around 50 km/h, highlighted in one fell swoop all the potential danger of the current technical regulation. In an interview given to the Up To Speed podcast, however, Bearman decided to also point the finger at Colapinto, who according to him, by making a slight movement to the left to close the space into which the Haas driver seemed to want to slip, had significant co-responsibility in the accident. In particular, the young English talent who grew up in the FDA complained that with his behavior Colapinto would have broken a sort of gentleman’s agreement that the drivers had stipulated on the Friday before the race. Colapinto unacceptable “Franco moved in front of me to defend his position. Last year he would have been at the limit, but probably acceptable with a speed difference of only 5 or 10 km/h. But with 50 km/h [di differenza] he didn’t leave me enough space and I had to avoid a much more serious accident – said Bearman – when he moved to the left he made a small movement, but with that difference in speed any maneuver becomes enormous. So I was lucky not to hit him. It would have been much worse if I had done it.” “We talked about it on Friday and this makes everything even more frustrating – thundered Bearman, continuing in his interview – among all the riders we said to each other: ‘We need to have a little more mutual respect. Try to defend your position a little earlier, because now with this regulation the speed differences are much bigger than they have ever been in our sport.’ And then two days later what happened happened: this is unacceptable to me. We need to find a solution between the drivers, have a little more mutual respect, because I wasn’t happy with his gesture at all”, commented the Haas representative.
