The words of the former Ferrari
After two GPs, only two teams are still stuck with zero points in the Constructors’ standings. If a difficult start could be expected for the debutant Cadillac on the Aston Martin instead there were huge expectations for the start of the Adrian Newey era. The AMR26, however, is currently unjudgeable due to the inadequacy of the Honda power unit, which for the second time is now turning into a curse for Fernando Alonso, who already from 2015 to 2017 had to deal with the insufficient competitiveness of the engine created by the Japanese company at the time of McLaren.
According to a veteran of the Circus, the former Ferrari technician Jock Clearthe situation within Aston Martin is not expected to improve before 2027: “I don’t think anyone likes the situation Aston Martin is in – said Clear reached by Ignition Casino – we’re all very surprised, but unless you work inside Aston, you can’t know for sure what the problems are. I sincerely hope that Aston and Adrian Newey manage to solve as many problems as possible in the shortest possible time, but I don’t know what would give them a solution. If we only look at development, it will take some time, we are talking about next year. But if they have a specific problem that they can solve that will suddenly provide another 100 horsepower, then that would be a better scenario. I hope that’s the case. I find it difficult to understand why they are so far behind the competition.”
In any case, Clear does not believe that Alonso is the right driver in such a delicate situation: “Alonso is one of the drivers I’ve never worked with. I don’t even think I’ve ever spoken to him. I don’t understand him at all. Of course, I know he’s a brilliant driver, really brilliant. Alonso has done incredible things with cars, so it’s clear he still has enormous talent behind the wheel. If I had to choose a driver to get me out of this difficult situation, however, Alonso would certainly not be the first choice. This is my fear. This situation doesn’t suit his abilities at all.”
