Emotions in Spain The first driver to call for caution after the Barcelona Grand Prix was Lewis Hamilton, but the success achieved by the seven-time world champion in Ferrari generated enormous emotions at the same time. After a complicated start with the Maranello company, Sir Lewis finally broke what seemed like a sort of curse with the Red, and the celebration on the podium highlighted how much the moment of celebration with the team was eagerly awaited for both him and the team members. Hamilton’s commitment Rob Smedley, at Ferrari from 2004 to 2014 and former track engineer of Felipe Massa, noticed this. The Briton, in the High Performance Racing podcast, reported that he had never lost contact with the Maranello team, so much so that he was part of group chats with former colleagues, all enthusiastic about Hamilton’s work: “He puts a lot of effort into it – he commented – people always misunderstand Lewis because of the armor he has created around his public image, but he is a guy who, like all the others, Verstappen, Michael Schumacher, Vettel and all those great champions, works harder and is more committed to achieving the goals levels he’s in. When you commit to something, especially to win a Grand Prix, when you put your all into it and you keep failing but you keep trying again, when it happens, in the end, it’s an explosion of emotions.” Another winning chapter? Having joined Ferrari in 2004, the year in which Michael Schumacher won his seventh and final world title, Smedley went so far as to reveal not only what his former colleagues think about Hamilton, but also how the latter could write a ‘Schumacher’ story in modern-day Ferrari: “They love him – he added – and we talked about how this could be a Michael story. If Lewis manages to take control of the car, to revive the fortunes of the team, to start winning races and leading them to world championships, they will definitely love it.”
