Kimi Antonelli is no longer a surprise, he hasn’t been for a while, and with the triumph in the Montreal GP the poker of consecutive victories in F1 drops. The performance of the Bolognese was sensational, as he started very well and competed on equal terms with George Russell, with whom he engaged in a very intense duel for almost 30 laps: Kimi was his shadow and was ready to capitalize on every mistake made by the Briton, who could never drive calmly. Not even Antonelli can do it, who overtakes Russell on lap 22 but loses position two laps later after a mistake at the hairpin. The Mercedes also gets on the wall and immediately afterwards asks the Bolognese to give up the position despite having been taken off the track at the chicane before the finish line, when he is in front of the apex. Russell, the favorite at this juncture, was however struck by bad luck when a technical problem eliminated him from the GP on the 30th lap. A knockout that paves the way for Antonelli, who however still shows a better pace than his teammate, and above all projects the Italian to +43 in the World Championship. With Russell out of the GP, Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are there to put on a show. The Ferrari driver confirmed his excellent form with a very impressive performance, beating his rival with a nice overtaking on the outside of turn 1. They can both be enormously satisfied with the GP – and the smiles on the podium confirm this – also because theoretically they would have been a skimpy top-5 also in light of the updates from their rivals. Russell’s retirement and the madness of McLaren starting with the intermediates (before the GP there was a light rain that wet the track) open the fight for the podium, and for Hamilton this second place is the best result in a GP with Ferrari. If Hamilton laughs, Charles Leclerc cannot do the same. The one in Montreal was a completely anonymous and worrying fourth place, because the Monegasque’s weekend never turned on and the confidence in the SF-26 was always precarious: for the #16 even a scary sideways exit from turn-9. Top-5 for Isack Hadjar despite a 10″ penalty and a stop&go, heavy points for Franco Colapinto, Liam Lawson, Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz and Oliver Bearman. Eleventh is Oscar Piastri, whose race is a disaster between the team’s gamble at the start (the Australian is very skeptical about the choice of intermediate tires but is not listened to by the wall) and a bad mistake at the Casino hairpin, where he goes wide and hits Alex Albon squarely, who is then forced to retire. McLaren’s nightmare race was finally sealed by gearbox problems for Lando Norris, who was knocked out when he was ninth. F1 Canada, live coverage of the GP You can relive the emotions of the Montreal race with our live coverage. The next round F1 returns to the track in two weeks with the Monte-Carlo round. The weekend will start on Friday 5 June at 1.30pm with FP1, then FP2 at 5pm; on Saturday FP3 at 12.30pm and Qualifying, as always fundamental, at 4pm. On Sunday the GP will start at 3pm.
