FIA, safety tests The FIA officially introduces a new rear light system on Friday in Montreal. As we anticipated, in the only free practice session the single-seaters are equipped with colored light signals, designed to help the drivers understand more quickly any sudden slowdowns of the cars ahead of them on the track based on the energy output. The new system was created based on feedback from riders in the first part of the year and will be tested in this hour of the session. Starting with this evening’s Sprint Qualifying, however, we will return to the red flashing light for all the different states of the MGU-K: no longer at full power, fully deactivated, and superclip. The press release “During free practice we will test a new rear light system for the power reduction of the MGU-K. This change follows the feedback from the pilots collected in the first events”, reads the note from the Federation. “The trial introduces a color-coded system to distinguish between different states of the MGU-K: MGU-K no longer at full power, MGU-K fully deactivated, and superclip. Previously, these states were all indicated by a red flash. We will revert to the standard taillight system for the remainder of the weekend and evaluate next steps based on feedback from teams and drivers.” The initiative was created above all for safety purposes, to avoid episodes similar to Oliver Bearman’s accident at Suzuka, forced to make a sudden maneuver to avoid Franco Colapinto’s Alpine, which was traveling around 45 km/h less at the Spoon.
