Free Racing at Mercedes: Wolff’s Plan for Russell and Antonelli

Çok Okunanlar
The internal battle between Mercedes drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli has become one of the key talking points of the season, with team principal Toto Wolff reportedly setting clear rules from the outset to manage their on-track rivalry.
It has emerged that from the opening race in Australia, Mercedes has taken a transparent approach in defining how its drivers should compete. Young driver Kimi Antonelli revealed that the team granted both drivers the freedom to race, but within strict boundaries.

“The team was very clear from the first race in Australia,” Antonelli said. “They told us: ‘You can race each other, but with respect, and without doing anything stupid.’”
Mercedes is well aware of the potential risks of an intra-team title fight, having previously experienced the intense rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg between 2014 and 2016. It is understood that Toto Wolff is keen to avoid a repeat of such tensions.
Antonelli added that both he and Russell are fully aware of the expectations. “Of course, George and I are allowed to race each other, but we must do it with respect and without taking unnecessary risks. The team has given us equal opportunities, and the only request is to keep it clean.”
At present, Antonelli is leading the drivers’ championship, with Russell closely behind. The key question now is whether Mercedes can maintain this balance of controlled rivalry throughout the season, or whether tensions on track will eventually take over.
