Wolff calls, Vasseur replies “We are a bit surprised that Ferrari is able to introduce such substantial updates. In my opinion they will soon run out of money, the ones foreseen by the budget cap. We can’t do it, we don’t have a sufficient margin in the spending ceiling to be able to introduce as many parts as they do. The only ones who are not slowing down the pace of updates are those of Ferrari. In Montreal we introduced an important package and then minor components and so did Red Bull and McLaren. Only Ferrari seems to have no limits in this sense”. After the Austrian GP Toto Wolff released these statements about the innovations produced by the Maranello team. Until the British GP, numerically, Ferrari introduced 32 new features compared to 17 for Mercedes, a number that must be updated to 33 after what was made official by the FIA in the usual roundup preceding the first official session of the race weekend. In an interview given to Corriere della Sera, Ferrari team principal Frederic Vasseur responded in kind to his Mercedes colleague: “When they told me I thought it was a joke, I found it ironic that it came from Toto himself. It never occurred to me to calculate either Mercedes’ developments or budget, it’s the FIA’s job. I don’t waste energy and I’m not at all worried about Ferrari’s plans.” It should be remembered that the engine innovations attributable to the ADUO are ‘covered’ and budget level by increases provided for by the regulation for engine manufacturers who have to catch up with their rivals.
