Colapinto must earn his place Franco Colapinto’s first years in F1 followed the same pattern. The Argentine was never sure of his place for the following season, and he had to earn it with his performances on the track. He didn’t succeed in 2024 at Williams (where he was, however, a reserve), and also last year he was in doubt until the summer break. Surprisingly, even in his best season in the Circus, Colapinto is not certain of his place for 2027. While Pierre Gasly represents a certainty for Alpine with his 42 points in the drivers’ standings, the class of 2003 is constantly under scrutiny. In Argentina more than someone believes that relations with managing director Steve Nielsen have deteriorated. To support this hypothesis, there is a video published on Alpine social networks in which the Briton comments on the Silverstone GP while totally ignoring the Colapinto race. The Argentines (who don’t get along well with the English for historical reasons) commented angrily, underlining that Colapinto started 19th and finished ninth, ahead of his teammate. The video This is the video with which Nielsen comments on the British GP. At Silverstone, Nielsen admitted that Colapinto will have to earn his seat for 2027: “Everyone wants more. I think Franco is a driver who took a while to take off, so to speak. He’s improving. This year he’s already had some good races, I’m thinking of those in Miami and Shanghai. When the time comes, we’ll make the appropriate decisions. If he’s good enough, he’ll stay; if he’s not, there will be a better option. Formula 1 is like that.” It is no mystery that Alpine is following the developments between Fernando Alonso and Aston Martin very closely: the two-time world champion could join Flavio Briatore for one last – sensational – stint in F1 at over 45 years of age.
