Carlos Sainz has changed his mind. He had been one of the drivers most critical of the new rules, either because of his role as director of the GPDA (the so-called “union” of Formula 1 drivers), or also because his Williams certainly did not start this era in the best way. Carlos Sainz Jr, however, now seems to be correcting his approach and showing himself to be a little more conciliatory towards the revolutionary regulation which in the first three races has overturned the driving style of the fastest single-seaters in the world. And, a bit as reiterated in recent days by Stefano Domenicali, who appeared quite happy with the way in which the drivers collaborated on changing the rules, the Spanish driver said he was satisfied with the innovations, while waiting to actually try them on the track in Miami. The opinion of the Spanish driver “From the beginning – said Carlos Sainz, interviewed by Dazn Spain – I always said that we had to have an open mind because, with such a big change in the regulations, certainly not everything would have gone well right away. However, I am happy to have seen a certain proactivity and some changes taking place. They are changes that will probably have an effect, although it is possible that there are other things that we will have to change in the future. But I am happy that measures are being taken and I can’t wait to see what effects it will have on the cars, whether we can push them to the limit in qualifying and how they will fare on track.” An opening of credit of no small importance, and not only for the role of director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association (a position he shares with George Russell) but also for the harsh criticism of the regulatory text after the scary accident involving Oliver Bearman in the last Japanese GP. “The accident – he said at Suzuka – is linked to something that the FIA and FOM had been warned about by the drivers. It was only a matter of time. We are reaching speed differences of 40-50 km/h and this accident was inevitable”. “I hope that Formula 1 reconsiders its position, because it is clear that these regulations have gaps and problems that need to be addressed before going to Miami,” concluded Carlos Sainz in commenting on the blow from his young English colleague.
