Ben Sulayem is unstoppable Mohammed Ben Sulayem has been president of the FIA since 2021 and recently obtained his second mandate. On paper, with the three-term limit, Sulayem’s reign would have lasted until 2033 at the latest, but now this limit has fallen. According to what was underlined by the BBC, in fact, in the meeting of the world motorsport council the limit of three mandates was in fact cancelled, a decision which gathered a ‘Bulgarian’ majority of more than 90%, 90.71% to be precise. For the presidency for life, however, Ben Sulayem has another limit to expire, namely that of the maximum age of 70 to hold this office (he is 64). The English newspaper highlighted that this will be Sulayem’s next move as he intends to keep the federal scepter for life. In addition to clearing the ground by dropping one obstacle after another to his never-ending reign, Ben Sulayem is also continuing to make it increasingly difficult for a potential rival to run for office. The deadline by which potential presidential candidates must submit a detailed list of their team of vice presidents has more than doubled, going from 49 to 100 days before the election date. “The decisions approved by our members reflect the continued progress we are making together as a federation – Sulayem’s words – thanks to stronger governance, financial discipline and a clear long-term vision, we are building an FIA better equipped to support our members, strengthen our championships and make a concrete contribution to motorsports and mobility around the world”.
