Alonso’s difficult Sunday
As expected, Fernando’s Sunday Alonso it was full of suffering. The two-time world champion in fact stopped after 14 laps due to an unspecified technical problem on his Aston Martin. Eleven laps later, the team then sent him back on track for another ten laps in order to accumulate the data that he was unable to collect between Montmeló and Bahrain.
The Spaniard had an excellent start on the soft tyre: for a few corners he was even in the top-10, despite starting from 17th position. However, the lack of competitiveness of the AMR26 forced Alonso to be an easy prey for those chasing him.
“I’ll stop at the first problem“, the two-time world champion said yesterday. And so it was. To verify the nature of the problem that forced Alonso into the pits, the AMR26 certainly suffers in terms of reliability, and not just on the engine side.
The main problem with the car remains the power unit: the Honda engine is not at the hoped-for level and also produces serious vibrations in the single-seater. Alonso’s hope is that the Japanese will soon resolve the difficulties related to the performance and safety of the engine, but the #14 knows well that the process will take time. Time that Alonso, at 44 years of age, no longer wanted to waste.
