A shocking start In recent years Aston Martin had made no secret of its firm intention to aim full force at 2026 to establish itself among the top teams in Formula 1. Lawrence Stroll had left no stone unturned, stocking up on top-level technicians – above all Adrian Newey – and choosing Honda, recently a serial winner with Verstappen as its engine partner. But nothing went as expected, given that Honda itself found itself light years away from the other engine manufacturers and that Aston Martin can currently only duel with the newborn Cadillac, decidedly distant from all the other teams. A disaster on all fronts, among other things with team principal Adrian Newey who was last spotted at the pit wall in Australia on March 8th. 10 more races of passion 4 GPs have passed, but the road to seeing a recovery is still very long. A real walk in the desert, as told with resignation by Fernando Alonso in interviews with the Spaniards from As and Marca over the weekend in Miami: “Unfortunately, when speaking with you, I will be repetitive, because we won’t have improvements until the summer. We will have to manage this level of frustration on the part of everyone in the team, but I think we are relaxed and determined to have a better second half of the season.” Alonso continued: “If we gained two or three tenths in every race, our position wouldn’t change. The car in front of us is a second away. We won’t improve performance until after the summer, it won’t happen before race 14. There’s a long way to go. Until the problems are understood and resolved, it’s difficult to have the confidence to make progress in performance. At least having found the solution to the vibrations was a relief.”
