Global energy company Sinopec has opened its first retail petrol station in Australia, marking the Chinese firm’s entry into the local fuel market with a site on Nepean Highway in Frankston, Victoria.

The service station represents Sinopec’s commitment to the Australian market and positions the company along one of the state’s busiest arterial roads, with approximately 21,000 vehicles travelling the route daily.

Sinopec Australia General Manager Yang Boyu said the opening reflects the company’s global vision of delivering cleaner energy solutions to local communities.

“Sinopec’s mission is simple, to bring green and premium energy to Australia and to the wider communities we serve,” Yang said at the opening ceremony.

“Through our global vision of ‘Cleaner Energy, Better Life’, we are investing in projects that deliver environmental and economic benefits, while deepening our long-term partnership with the Australian people.”

The Frankston location provides premium fuel options alongside local employment opportunities and modern retail facilities. Sinopec has also committed to supporting community initiatives including Frankston’s Accessible Beach programme.

Frankston City Mayor Kristopher Bolam welcomed the investment, noting the strategic importance of the location for the estimated 8 million vehicles that use the highway annually.

“Frankston is proud to welcome Sinopec, a global company investing in our city, creating local jobs and strengthening essential infrastructure,” Bolam said.

“This service station will be the first thing people see when they drive into Frankston and onto the Peninsula, a symbol of confidence and partnership.”

The opening coincides with the 10th anniversary of the China–Australia Free Trade Agreement (ChAFTA), which has facilitated increased trade and investment between the two countries over the past decade.

Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Melbourne Fang Xinwen said Sinopec’s entry represents new opportunities for bilateral economic cooperation.

“Sinopec’s entry into the Australian retail fuel sector represents not only the company’s international vision but also the new vitality of China–Australia economic cooperation,” Fang said.

To mark the opening, Sinopec offered promotional pricing of 98.9 cents per litre for unleaded petrol and premium diesel, attracting significant interest from local motorists.

China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation (Sinopec) operates in more than 60 countries and ranks among the world’s largest integrated energy and chemical companies. The company currently operates four retail service stations across Australia, located in Frankston, Thomastown, Kialla and Soldiers Hill.

Sinopec has indicated plans for continued expansion across Australia, focusing on safe operations and customer service improvements in the communities it serves.
