Kia recalls 462,000 Tellurides due to seat fire risk

A second recall for the same defect raises serious questions about the adequacy and verification process of Kia’s 2024 solution Kia America has issued a safety recall covering 462,869 2020-2024 model year Kia Telluride sport utility vehicles due to the risk of seat motor combustion, including while the vehicle is parked. Owners are directed to park affected vehicles outside and away from buildings until the dealership’s resolution process is completed. The recall, called NHTSA 26V430000, is the second action to address this defect. The same issue was addressed in the 2024 campaign, but Kia acknowledged as part of this recall that an improper repair could lead to the engine overheating. Repetition indicates a failure in the original solution rather than a new error. The basic mechanism is accidental knocking on the front power seat slide cover or button, dislodging or misaligning the switch. This can cause the seat motor to run continuously and produce enough heat to start a fire. Kia confirmed seven seat fires and 11 seat engine meltdowns in the affected population. The new remedy is an electronic fuse that will cut off power to the engine if the seat switch becomes dislodged or damaged internally. Owner notification is scheduled to begin on August 13, when dealers complete the installation. Affected vehicle identification numbers will be searchable on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s website starting July 17, 2026.
