A Sunday ‘in control’ for Russell George Russell achieved his second success of the season in Austria after the victory achieved on his debut in Melbourne, Australia. The Mercedes driver led the group from the first to the last corner, leaving the lead only during his pit stops. In the second stint Max Verstappen closed to almost a second behind, but Russell’s leadership was never really questioned. When asked about this aspect at a press conference, Russell responded like this. “Did Toto Wolff say I was cold-blooded? To tell the truth, I didn’t have this perception, it was a calm and controlled race – Russell’s words – I think that, if we excluded Max from the picture, we would say that it was a really strong performance from Mercedes, with a 20 second advantage over McLaren and even more over Ferrari. But with the updates on Red Bull, yesterday Max was in contention for pole and today he showed a truly exceptional race pace. He put me under pressure in the central phase of the race and It forced me to stop with 28 laps to go, which was quite uncomfortable. However, I did the first 20 laps of that stage really solidly, which allowed me to take home the win in the last eight.”
