McLaren is improving but for some the unattainable Oscar Piastri may think that at least on a Friday afternoon, perhaps through the first half of the 2025 season, everything is coming easy to him and McLaren is the car to beat. In FP2 of the Austrian GP, at the Red Bull Ring, both MCL40 and Piastri finally appeared in form: the Australian driver set the second best time of the session, outperforming teammate Lando Norris, but had to bow out ahead of the author of the best time, the fantastic Andrea Kimi Antonelli, 237 thousandths faster than Piastri. “It was a good day for me,” Piastri told Sky Sport F1 at the end of the session – “I think we are one step behind Mercedes, or at least Kimi, which is what we expected. However, it was a very productive day. We tried many things. We’ll have some work to do and we got that from Spain in particular, in my opinion. But I think we did a good job of trying to improve some things.” However, Piastri, as always, did not want to balance himself too positively against the ‘hot’ period of the weekend and named Mercedes and especially Antonelli as big favourites: “Get them closer? Let’s see. It’s really impressive that Kimi set that time on the soft tires in the second lap. So we have to wait to see if we can find anything during the night. But there is definitely room for us drivers (McLaren) to learn from each other. “What will we try to implement?” “We will find out and see how it goes,” he concluded.
