The opinion of the world champion in 2016 After the first ‘step’ of the process which could lead to some regulatory changes starting from the Miami GP, the FIA released an official note in which it underlined that “it has been agreed between the parties that, although the events held so far have offered exciting races, there is a commitment to making changes to some aspects of the regulations in the field of energy management”. On Thursday there will be another step before the decisive meeting on the agenda for 20 April. In terms of proposals on the table, the only viable ones in the short term are those relating to changes in the parameters regarding the maximum battery charging threshold and the maximum power that can be delivered when using the electrical power available in the battery. The result will be to slow down the cars on average over the course of the lap, while avoiding potentially dangerous drastic drops in power. When asked about the race dynamics of these first GPs, world champion Nico Rosberg commented on this start to the season: “I understand the criticism because it is quite unnatural to slow down so much on a straight line or even to downshift a gear to help recharge the battery – said Rosberg as reported by the Bloomberg newspaper – it is understandable that a spectator could be a little taken aback by an F1 car that suddenly slows down when it should instead be the maximum expression of speed. However, as long as there are great battles on the track between teams and drivers, I wouldn’t worry too much.”
