Red Bull is keen to make a good impression in its home race, presenting itself in Austria with a substantial package of updates. The innovations affect both aerodynamics and weight, with the mechanics busy in the pits for a long time assembling the advanced RB22s. Verstappen recognizes the team’s efforts, but is not sure that they will be enough to return to fighting for victory, also given the constant progress of the competition. The updates are arriving In Styria, Red Bull will try to make another leap forward with a substantial package of updates. Max Verstappen confirms the arrival of the news, but curbs the enthusiasm of those hoping for a leap similar to the one made between Japan and Miami: “When you are so far behind, taking steps forward is easier. The difficult part comes when you have to fight for victory. Let’s see if we can get back into that fight, I’m not sure. The team is certainly pushing hard to make the car faster. However, we know that other teams are also constantly bringing updates. We always have to try to gain a little more to close the gap, which was evident in Barcelona if it were still. Let’s hope this weekend can go better.” Certainly, however, the package that arrived in Austria is an important one. On Thursday the Red Bull mechanics worked for a long time on both cars, taking longer than the competition to complete the preparation work, evidently also to ensure compliance with the geometries imposed by the regulations. Word of the updates also reached Mercedes, with Antonelli also speaking about weight reduction work for the RB22: “I believe that Red Bull will be very strong this weekend, because they bring a very important package which also concerns weight and that is free performance.” The problems of the RB22 Lightening the car and increasing its aerodynamic load can only benefit Red Bull, whose problems, however, go much further. “There are a number of things we need to get to grips with,” Verstappen explained. “[A Barcellona] we were a little worried about the high-speed corners, but I think it’s a question of overall balance. The car is heavy, we need to find more downforce, more grip and improve agility on the curbs. All these things can make the difference in improving the car.” All that remains is to wait for the verdict of the track, which will tell how much the updates arrived in Austria will be able to cure Red Bull’s ills.
