The Lego-Gate explodes in F1 F1 drivers don’t live only on the World Championship. The Circus is such because it also brings with it a caravan of sponsorships and events in which the drivers must participate to involve and entertain fans from all over the world. One of these is the Lego Parade at Silverstone, which on Sunday morning will see the drivers parade in 22 perfectly functional cars, created by the Danish company and decorated with the liveries of their respective teams. Well, this parade has caused several controversies among the drivers: Max Verstappen considers it a clown, and now Lewis Hamilton has threatened to boycott it. The initiative, which replicates the one made in Miami last year, does not excite the drivers: the basis of the discontent is not the risk of injuries (the maximum speed of the cars is very low, around 25 km/h) but an economic question. According to British sources such as the Telegraph and the Daily Mail, Hamilton is fed up with the ever-increasing number of promotional and media commitments required of drivers without additional compensation. “It’s the most dangerous part of the weekend, I don’t know if I’ll participate,” commented the Ferrari driver in the press conference, hiding the crux of the problem. The seven-time world champion is among the first to have publicly expressed this discomfort, which however is also shared by other colleagues. Despite the Briton’s statements, Ferrari subsequently confirmed Hamilton’s presence at Sunday’s Lego Parade. The controversy is similar to those that have occurred in other sports. For example, in golf, Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay led an initiative to block Netflix cameras from accessing the US team room during the 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome, believing that players should be paid for their participation.
