F1 engines, we are moving towards the return of V8s This year Formula 1 has translated one of the greatest technical revolutions of recent decades onto the track. A revolution, however, stillborn, as it was founded on the increase in the importance of electric, which did not have the growth expected a few years ago. The first doubts arose already in 2022, but it was too late: in order not to ruin the investments, it was decided to continue along a dead-end road. The result is there for all to see, between ad hoc adjustments after just three races and the plan to adjust the endothermic-electric ratio to 60-40 at the latest in 2028. Without declaring it openly, F1 has understood that it has made a misstep with the similar 50-50 of 2026. It is no coincidence that FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem is forcing his hand to close the current technical cycle a year early and welcome already in 2030 the return of turbo V8 engines powered by sustainable petrol and with minimal electrification. F1 president Stefano Domenicali joined the Emirati. Domenicali’s words “I agree 1000%, I have always said it. I fully support the vision of the president of the FIA. With sustainable fuels, lighter cars and V8 engines, we would return to the pure essence of motorsport. It is what I have always loved”, this is his comment to L’Équipe. Ben Sulayem’s words Ben Sulayem was categorical in this regard and already gave the arrival of the V8s a certainty: “It’s only a matter of time. In 2031, the FIA will have the power to do it, without the need for any vote from the engine manufacturers. But I aim to bring it forward to 2030, something that everyone is now asking of us.”
