ColapintoAlpines.t.–1 F1 Canada, the news from the Tests The Mercedes updates are working, of course. Montreal, in itself, is a track that has always winked at Toto Wolff’s team in recent history, and in Canada’s only free practice session the two W17s excelled: Kimi Antonelli prevailed again with a time that the competition couldn’t even dream of (1:13.402). Ferrari, in fact, follows by a good seven tenths with Lewis Hamilton (third at +0.774) while Charles Leclerc is fourth at almost a second. George Russell was also beaten, stopping in the other Mercedes 142 thousandths behind an Antonelli who took no prisoners and continued his extraordinary form. For the Briton there was also a harmless spin in turn 1 in the last minutes of free practice. Ferrari defends itself on a track that puts the power units on full display, and therefore little suits them. At the moment it can only hope to maintain its role as second force, considering that the Mercedes are apparently impregnable. Watch out, however, for Red Bull and McLaren who know how to step up significantly when the fight for pole position heats up: Oscar Piastri even gets the time on the hard compound; the Australian is seventh behind Max Verstappen and Lando Norris. Good top-10 for Arvid Lindblad, Nico Hülkenberg and even Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin, below Haas and Williams expectations: worth mentioning are the accidents of Esteban Ocon and Alex Albon (who unfortunately hits a marmot in the stretch between turns 7 and turn 8), which cause two of the three red flags in a session which for this reason is extended by half an hour.
