The heat at the Red Bull Ring While waiting for the first free practice sessions of the Austrian Grand Prix, one of the major concerns is linked to the heat emergency that will hit Styria this weekend, with maximum temperatures always above 30°C. In addition to putting a strain on tire wear and the cooling system of the power units, those who will have to deal with the scorching heat will essentially be the drivers. The protocol Precisely for this reason, the FIA has issued an anti-heat protocol to protect the safety of the latter inside the cockpit, where perceived temperatures can reach 40°C. For this reason, the International Federation has opened up the possibility for pilots to choose between using a cooling vest to lower body temperature, or, alternatively, there will be the addition of ballast required by the regulation to maintain the technical balance between those who adopt the device and those who decide to do without it. “In accordance with Article B1.5.10 of the FIA F1 Regulations, having received a forecast from the Official Weather Service that the Heat Index will exceed 31.0°C at some time during the racing of this event, a Heat Hazard is declared,” reads the FIA statement. The introduction of the anti-heat protocol dates back to what happened in the 2023 Qatar GP, when several drivers were forced to seek medical attention due to the very high temperatures suffered during the race.
