A sensational disappointment When Adrian Newey accepted Aston Martin’s offer, Fernando Alonso hoped that the arrival of the legendary British designer could give the team the decisive push to fight for victory.
The 2026 regulatory revolution as a chance to get back on top has so far proved to be a boomerang for Aston Martin, which has lost further ground and is currently the tenth fastest car on the grid. Will Alonso continue? In just over three months Fernando Alonso will turn 45 and many are wondering whether or not this disastrous 2026 will be the last year in F1 of the two-time world champion.
Alonso himself spoke about it at the Automobile Club of Monaco during his visit to the historic GP: “How long will I still be in F1? I don’t know, it’s difficult to say. I love what I do, I love competing. I did my first race when I was 3 and now I’m 44, so I’ve spent 41 years of my life behind the wheel. When the time comes to stop racing, it will be a difficult decision to accept.” Alonso was then even more specific about his intentions for 2027: “For now I feel that that moment has not yet arrived. I feel competitive, I feel motivated and happy when I drive. So I hope that this is not my last season”, explained the 2005 and 2006 world champion.
