Mercedes’ Italian driver Kimi Antonelli has become the 2026 Formula 1 World Champion. By finishing third in the Mexican Grand Prix—the 19th race of the season—the 20-year-old Italian driver also claimed the title of the youngest champion in F1 history. “I have no words; I’m still trying to process what just happened. It’s been an incredible season,” said Antonelli.

Finishing third in the Mexican Grand Prix, the 19th race of the season, 20-year-old (20 years and 68 days old) Antonelli became the youngest champion in the history of Formula 1. The previous record was held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he set it. The race took place over 71 laps at the 4,304-meter Hermanos Rodríguez Circuit in Mexico City.
The Mexican Grand Prix was won by Dutch driver Max Verstappen, racing for Red Bull, with a time of 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 28.772 seconds.
Ferrari’s British driver Lewis Hamilton finished in second place, 0.799 seconds behind the leader.
Antonelli, who has secured 9 race victories this season, finished third, 4.006 seconds behind Verstappen.
Expressing his joy at becoming this season’s champion, Antonelli emphasized that he would not have reached this level without the support of his team and his family. The Italian driver said, “I can’t find the words; I’m still trying to process what just happened. It’s been an incredible season…”
