Crisis-busting victory for the Ferrari driver “I’m happy for all those who suffered with me.” Charles Leclerc really took a load off himself after his return to success in the British GP at Silverstone, celebrated with a team radio that spoke volumes about how much the Monegasque had suffered in recent weeks. Leclerc had a less than brilliant weekend in Canada and in his home race in Monaco he received a zero result due to an accident which opened the ‘crisis’ on the braking system. In Barcelona in qualifying Leclerc ended up on the wall “trying to copy my telemetry” said Hamilton and in the race a technical problem arose which forced the Monegasque to his second consecutive zero. To complete the picture, in Austria Leclerc closed the list of top team drivers with an anonymous eighth place finish. The victory at Silverstone combined with Antonelli’s zero took Leclerc from -96 points to -71 in the Drivers’ standings. Asked at the press conference whether the criticism had given impetus, Leclerc responded with great frankness: “I don’t know if it’s something that gives me energy, I honestly believe that anyone who says that is actually lying. I think that being surrounded by so much negativity is not pleasant at all. I tried to isolate myself and exclude this ‘background noise’ by not looking at my phone.” “In the space of two days in this sport you go from riches to rags or vice versa – he added – and this can influence the way you perceive things. I knew that I had not unlearned driving overnight. These cars are very particular, very different from the ones we have driven since the beginning of our careers, so it takes a little more time to get used to.”
