There’s a lot of talk about engines and vibrations at Aston Martin, but that doesn’t mean that activities in other departments are on pause. On the contrary, the AMR26 has already received the first aerodynamic updates, the originality of which could be an inspiration for the competition. The front wing, for example, takes up a solution explored in 2024, while the bottom exploits a regulatory hole first discovered by Red Bull. The news on the floor The first significant updates on the AMR26 have arrived in Australia, where a new version of the floor debuted, which in today’s Formula 1 continues to be the most important aerodynamic component. In particular, the Silverstone team has interpreted in an original way the regulations relating to flow conveyors in the entry section, limited to a maximum of five. Red Bull had already organized the various elements in a creative way to try to replicate the outwash effect of previous ground effect cars, pushing part of the flows outwards so as to move the turbulence generated by the front wheels away from the surface. On the RB22, in particular, the innermost element curves outwards and acts as a wall to which the four remaining appendages attach. Aston Martin, however, has gone even further, modeling the upper part of the bottom in such a way as to create a depression, obtaining a difference in height whose shape ensures a certain outwash effect. The recess also frees up space and allows the two outermost flow diverters to extend in height up to the bottom, helping to push the flows laterally. The team then touched up the front edge of the floor for the Japanese Grand Prix, but without distorting the very particular approach of the Melbourne update. The evolution of the front wing The front wing has also undergone development compared to the launch version. Aston Martin has never given up on the spoon design of the wing, also continuing to be the only team, together with Mercedes, to use a single moving element for active aerodynamics. What changed, however, was the main profile, on which two notches appeared at approximately two thirds of the overall width (1), also replicated on the upper flaps (2). The Silverstone team had already experimented with a similar geometry in 2024, only to then abandon it, before the new aerodynamic regulations restored its value. The new aileron that debuted in Australia also differs from the original one due to the shape of the endplates (3). The external bulkheads are now much more curved outwards, contributing to the outwash effect also sought in the bottom. Finally, in Japan, Aston Martin has brought a new version of the wing, characterized by the reduced chord of the third element and the raised external pavement (4). The problem of vibrations The first glimpse of the aerodynamic development of the AMR26 shows that Aston Martin certainly has no shortage of ideas, but everything takes second place in the face of the lack of horsepower from the power unit and the serious problem of vibrations. In this regard, the first corrective measures have already arrived and not only in the area of the combustion engine. The Race reported that a new steering column was tested during free practice in Japan which would have significantly reduced the vibrations transmitted to the driver, but was not used in the race. In any case, the AMR26 is preparing to welcome new solutions and updates in the coming weeks, with the knowledge that it will not be possible to make a qualitative leap in 2027 without first having worked on the current machine.
