The Stellantis Safety Center in Orbassano celebrates its 50th anniversary: 24,000 crash tests have been carried out since 1976. Integrated throughout the virtual development process, the results contributed to technological evolution, increasing the safety of Stellantis vehicles and the protection of people. visit the center “This facility is committed to ensuring and improving vehicle safety and human protection. An example of excellence in research and innovation, this center continues to set standards within Stellantis and throughout the industry,” said Emanuele Cappellano, President of Stellantis Europe.
Founded in 1976, the Safety Center has developed expertise through advanced research and innovation and today represents a key component of the Stellantis engineering ecosystem and an internationally recognized facility for vehicle safety development and crash testing. With a total area of 110,000 square meters and more than 100 employees working in two shifts, the Security Center is a system of excellence integrated with other company components. Featuring four test tracks with four impact points, the center can perform up to 1,000 tests per year on automobiles, commercial vehicles and their components, performing tests through both physical and virtual simulation.
A unique structural mechanism in the world has recently been integrated with a computerized camera positioning system with 13 moving lenses, focusing on the point of impact. Additionally, these rails enable high-speed underbody video recording and the mounting of up to five cameras on test vehicles, providing an unprecedented level of crash dynamics analysis. This combination of physical testing and integrated digital engineering processes allows the Center to analyze virtually any crash scenario and accurately reproduce it in a virtual environment. The result provides industry-leading efficiency in both development time and resource utilization while maintaining the highest standards of technical accuracy and validation quality. As a result, models tested at Orbassano can be certified in accordance with more than 175 international technological and safety standards, including self-certifying markets, where in-depth technical expertise and scrupulous compliance with testing procedures are essential. Additionally, the Orbassano Safety Center provides security systems such as seat belts and airbags, as well as the body, doors, seats, instrument panels, etc. It is also equipped to test individual vehicle components such as In addition to improving safety, the results of these tests support product development and improvement by providing certified and valuable information for suppliers.
The Orbassano Safety Center is part of an integrated, global engineering and testing system that also includes other Safety Centers at Belchamps in France, Chelsea in Michigan and Betim in Brazil.
