What’s happening After the Miami GP everything seemed to be moving towards the ratification of an important correction regarding the 2027 power unit. The FIA, the FOM and the teams seemed to agree on bringing the power distribution from the current perfect parity to a 60-40 in favor of the thermal component compared to the electric one, but according to what was reported by the newspaper The-Race.com the reality as always would be much more complex than a large majority which is far from being achieved. The teams in favor of these ‘new’ engines would be ‘only’ Mercedes and Red Bull, the teams that – ironically – currently have the best power units on the track. Ferrari and Audi would be against it, for different reasons, and would prefer that the change of pace be expected in 2028 and not in 2027. Audi would not want to make further investments beyond those already budgeted to correct the current power units split 50/50 between electric power and thermal power. At Ferrari, however, there are fears that a new power unit regulation for 2027 could actually overturn the current regulation envisaged by the ADUO which for example guarantees two interventions and extra budget in 2026 and 2027 if the engine has a performance deficit of more than 4% compared to the reference engine. Changing the engines as early as 2027 would necessarily mean allowing everyone to be able to intervene on the engines and Ferrari would lose an ‘advantage’ over Mercedes.
