A legal system that is no longer legal A couple of weeks ago, a particular ploy emerged used in qualifying by the Mercedes and Red Bull powered teams, teams that managed to exploit all the electric power on the final straight before the finish line, suffering the sudden cut of the electric horses and the consequent ’emergency block’ for 1 minute only in the cool-down lap or return to the pits.
This solution was permitted by the regulations, but had caused some discontent among rival teams, who asked the FIA for explanations.
The Federation intervened, banning this trick. FIA: changes from Miami The revelation comes from the English of The Race, who explained how Ferrari has started a dialogue with the FIA, focusing its objection on the safety risks deriving from this trick.
The Federation has therefore decided to ban this stratagem, in a document sent to the teams in which it is underlined that “while the possibility of deactivating the MGU-K remains available to the teams, the use of this function for purposes other than legitimate ones will not be tolerated”, i.e. emergency situations. The decision will be effective from the next race on the calendar, the one in Miami at the beginning of May.
