Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, a road-legal high-performance coupé developed with one overriding objective: maximum driving dynamics.
Combining a 646 hp (475 kW) V8 biturbo engine with rear-wheel drive, extensive weight reduction and a chassis engineered for precision, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung is designed to deliver an uncompromising driving experience on both winding roads and closed race circuits.
The bespoke model features a unique wide-body design with wider tracks, extensive use of carbon fiber and specially developed aerodynamic components. Each vehicle is comprehensively rebuilt at Mercedes-AMG’s headquarters in Affalterbach to the company’s highest manufactory standards.

Mercedes-Benz Group AG Chief Design Officer Bastian Baudy added that the model “sets new benchmarks with its uncompromising presence and driving dynamics,” highlighting its extensive use of carbon fiber, bold proportions and large grille.
Developed with Driving Dynamics as the Primary Goal
The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung originated from a simple question among AMG engineers: How far could the CLE be pushed toward maximum driving dynamics?
Rather than following a conventional product-development program, a small group of engineers began by building a prototype based on their own vision. The aim was not simply to combine a series of performance upgrades, but to rethink the vehicle as a complete performance package.
The current Mercedes-AMG CLE Coupé provides the technical foundation. AMG engineers in Affalterbach subsequently developed the bespoke model with increased engine output, a specially tuned chassis, extensive lightweight construction and numerous body modifications.
Compared with the donor vehicle, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung has shed approximately 170 kilograms. The body structure has also been extensively modified, resulting in a comprehensive rebuild carried out to Affalterbach manufactory standards — hence the “Spezialanfertigung” designation.
646 hp from an Enhanced 4.0-Litre V8 Biturbo
Power comes from a heavily upgraded version of AMG’s M177 EVO 4.0-litre V8 biturbo engine. Its 646 hp (475 kW) output is reflected directly in the model’s name, while maximum torque reaches 850 Nm between 2,500 and 4,500 rpm.
The engine uses a flat-plane crankshaft that reduces rotating mass and improves its ability to rev, while dedicated engine mapping further sharpens throttle response.
Thermal management has also been upgraded for demanding conditions. The V8 uses three separate cooling circuits: a high-temperature circuit for the engine and two low-temperature circuits for the charge air, transmission oil and 48-volt components.
In the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung, these systems have been specifically enhanced to cope with extreme operating conditions, including intensive track use and high ambient temperatures.
The V8 soundtrack is delivered through a bespoke high-performance exhaust system designed for increased gas flow and a more emotional sound character. The system’s cold-end components were developed in collaboration with Akrapovič, while the extensive use of titanium helps reduce weight.
Rear-Wheel Drive Replaces 4MATIC+
One of the most significant changes to the CLE’s powertrain is the removal of AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive.
Instead, the CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung sends power exclusively to the rear wheels. The change not only reduces weight but also gives the coupé a fundamentally different dynamic character.
An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential varies its locking action to optimize torque distribution between the rear wheels. According to AMG, this improves traction, stability and overall handling, while also allowing controlled drifting under suitable conditions.
AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G Transmission
Power is transmitted through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9G nine-speed automatic transmission, which combines rapid gear changes with the brand’s characteristic double-declutching function.
Depending on the selected AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving mode, the transmission can deliver either fast, sporty shifts or smoother and more discreet gear changes. Its nine forward gears also allow the engine to remain within its optimal rev range more frequently.
When maximum performance is required, the torque-converter transmission can execute multiple downshifts in rapid succession, giving the driver near-instant access to the V8’s full power.
The transmission’s characteristics can be adjusted through AMG DYNAMIC SELECT, with different drive programs offering tailored drivetrain settings.
Launch Control has also been specifically calibrated for the rear-wheel-drive configuration.
The CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung accelerates from 0 to 200 km/h in 11.4 seconds and has a top speed of 310 km/h.
