A beautiful victory Andrea Kimi Antonelli put on a great performance at Silverstone, managing to overtake pole man Lewis Hamilton in the Sprint and taking his first success in Saturday’s fast race. A good result therefore for Mercedes, who saw George Russell finish fourth. Antonelli’s victory Bradley Lord, Mercedes deputy team principal, commented to F1TV as follows: “Antonelli really impressed me, it was fantastic to see him start so well, probably even better than Ferrari. Compared to the beginning of the year there was a lot of work on the starts, congratulations to the whole team at the factory. Kimi demonstrated extremely mature driving. He understood that he potentially had an advantage in terms of tire degradation and waited for the right moment to launch the attack.” Russell’s difficulties Lord then dedicated a part of his analysis to George Russell: “Finishing higher than you started is always better. He seemed to have the pace to pass Lando, given that at the end he closed in quite quickly. He doesn’t feel comfortable, or at least not like the other side of the garage.” The use of energy in view of qualifying Many are wondering whether Mercedes, with the Parc Fermé interventions, will be able to use Ferrari’s energy delivery strategy: “There are certainly directions to follow”, admitted Lord, adding: “Yesterday we were a bit disappointed after Sprint qualifying. We lost everything in the slow corners, so that will be an area to focus on. But in the race we had a slight advantage. We hope to make some good changes and improve the basic set-up”.
And again: “We are all struggling with energy, we don’t have enough to distribute it in all three sectors. It’s a question of understanding what the optimal deployment is. Now we have much more information than yesterday.”
