The broadcaster got the nickname wrong. At the end of the Canadian GP, Hamilton and the Ferrari wall celebrated the second place of the seven-time world champion on the radio and team principal Frederic Vasseur called Hamilton by the nickname ‘Luigi’ which is nothing other than the Italian version of the English driver’s first name. Sky UK didn’t catch it live and in post-race interviews pit reporter Ted Kravitz asked Vasseur about what they thought was a nickname: “What did you call Hamilton on the radio? Old G?” Kravitz’s question to which Frederic Vasseur replied “Luigi” and then failed to hold back some healthy laughter in a little scene that went viral. The French broadcaster Canal+ in turn began the interview with Hamilton thus: “Should we call you Luigi? Where does this nickname come from?” with Hamilton explaining that “In Italy I would be called that”.
