Ohme, the UK’s largest and Europe’s fastest growing home EV charging company, has a way to combat the latest electricity price rises by enabling an EV to do the equivalent of 350 miles per gallon.
On 1 January 2026, the new Standard Variable Tariff for electricity rose to 27.69p/kWh. Charging your EV at this rate still represents a substantial saving compared to running a petrol car.
With the current price of petrol at around £6.17 per gallon (£1.36 per litre), a typical petrol car would travel around 40 miles on one gallon of fuel. However, the same amount spent charging an EV with Ohme on a smart energy tariff could see your car travel more than 350 miles!
“The idea of a car doing 350mpg would obviously be fanciful, but that could be the reality when charging your EV on a smart energy tariff at home with Ohme,” said Ohme CEO David Watson. “Charging at home will always be the most affordable place for EV drivers to charge their cars even with this latest rise and changing to a smart electricity tariff will enable drivers to maximise those savings still further.”
Fully-charging an Audi A6 Avant e-tron with a 75.8kWh battery from 0% with an Ohme smart charger on a dynamic tariff such as Intelligent Octopus Go could cost just £5.31 for its 361 mile WLTP claimed range. By comparison, the same charge on the new SVT rate will cost £20.99 – almost four times more.
