From GP2 to F1 Among Lewis Hamilton’s many successes, in addition to the seven world titles won in Formula 1, the Englishman also became champion in the GP2 Series twenty years ago, in the series now known as Formula 2. A victory obtained at the wheel of the ART Grand Prix, the French team founded by the current Ferrari Team Principal Frédéric Vasseur, which proved to be of fundamental importance in the growth of one of the greatest champions in the history of F1 before his debut in the Circus. Vasseur, in 2025, was therefore reunited with Sir Lewis after the Briton’s move to Maranello, which for now was rather disappointing for the #44. The transalpine engineer has defended his driver on several occasions from accusations of a lack of results, but the 57-year-old did not hide his full respect for a former Ferrari man, considered even “more passionate” than Hamilton himself. The great passion A fellow driver from Vasseur who goes by the name of Jean Alesi, who was in fact one of the most popular in the 90s despite having achieved only one career victory in the 1995 Canadian GP. A CV in F1 which does not reflect his true talent, betrayed by unfortunate episodes due to the poor reliability of the single-seaters or by accidents. In an interview on Pirelli’s official YouTube channel, Vasseur said that Alesi was the most passionate driver he had ever worked with, although their collaboration was never in F1 but in the German DTM championship: “Jean is very emotional. We didn’t do much together, but at one point I was at Mercedes in the DTM and he was also in the team. He is so passionate in everything that you can even feel it in his approach to the fans. They are in love with Jean, and maybe even he was a little too much emotional in his career, but he knows it.”
