In the minds of automobile enthusiasts, there are some roads that are not just routes but legends. Like America’s Route 66, Austria’s Großglockner Pass or Romania’s fascinating Transfăgărășan road. There is another name that has rapidly climbed to the top of this prestigious list in recent years: Scotland’s North Coast 500 route.

This unique route, which was officially launched in 2015 and has a length of approximately 800 kilometers, stretches along the wild coasts of Northern Scotland. The harsh waves of the Atlantic Ocean, the Highlands hills rising through the fog, historical castles and single-lane technical roads… We have the ideal companion to explore all of these: the fully electric Porsche Macan Turbo.

An Adventure Starting from Inverness
The starting and finishing point of the North Coast 500 is Inverness, known as the capital of the Highlands region. This historical city on the banks of the Ness River also opens the door to the famous Loch Ness legend.

We prefer to follow the route counterclockwise. So we can save Scotland’s most dramatic landscapes and most exciting driving routes for last. From the first kilometers, the harsh blue of the North Sea on one side and the rising green hills on the other side accompany us.
The quiet yet impressive performance of the Macan Turbo makes it feel like it was specially designed to enjoy these stunning views.

History, Flavor and Scottish Hospitality
Our first stop is Glenmorangie House in the town of Tain. The building, which was once used as the guest house of the famous whiskey distillery, today serves as an elegant boutique hotel.
The fresh Scottish seafood and local lamb served here reflect the gastronomic culture of the region at its best. During the summer months, the hotel’s chefs even take guests to collect wild garlic and herbs in the surrounding hills.
The North Coast 500 is not just a driving experience; It is also a window into Scottish culture and lifestyle.

Holy Land of Golf
The next morning we head towards Royal Dornoch Golf Club.

Royal Dornoch, one of the oldest golf courses in the world with a history dating back to 1616, is still considered the most natural course on the planet, according to many golf authorities.
Coming to this field, which players reached on horseback nearly four centuries ago, today with a 639 horsepower electric Macan Turbo symbolizes an interesting meeting of the past and the future.

On Royal Trails
As you move north, traffic decreases and nature becomes more dominant.
The Castle of Mey, which we reached at the end of the day, is one of the most impressive historical buildings in Scotland. Queen Elizabeth II This castle, where Elizabeth spent her summers for many years, still remains one of the favorite places of the British Royal Family.
Staying at the Granary Lodge on the grounds of the castle provides a royal experience. The seashells that the Queen collects during her daily walks and the rain boots standing at the entrance create the feeling that time has stopped here.

Energy from the Ocean
During the North Coast 500 you encounter not only the past but also the future.

The MeyGen facility on the Pentland Firth is the epitome of this. The facility, the world’s largest tidal power plant, produces electricity from ocean currents.
Charging the Macan Turbo here adds a different meaning to the journey. Our vehicle is now propelled by energy derived from Scotland’s harsh oceans.
The moments when electric mobility is so intertwined with nature are one of the most impressive parts of the trip.

NC500’s Contribution to the Region
North Coast 500 has transformed not only tourists but also the regional economy.
Claire and Martin Murray, a couple who converted an old mill into a whiskey distillery in Castletown, are a living example of this. Sales from a small office shelf a few years ago have now turned into a full-fledged business.
Like most of the local people, they also emphasize that thanks to NC500, new job opportunities have been created and it has become easier for the young population to stay in the region.

The Most Fascinating Part of the Highlands
After Thurso the route gets truly wild.

The single-lane roads around Loch Eriboll demonstrate the value of the Macan Turbo’s agility and all-wheel drive system.
Lundies House near Tongue is one of the most special accommodation points of the journey. Combining Scandinavian simplicity with Scottish craftsmanship, the hotel perfectly reflects the harsh but charming character of Northern Scotland.
The seafood and game meat served here comes to the table from the gardens where it was collected a few hours ago.

Kylesku Bridge and Porsche Enthusiasts
After passing the Kylesku Bridge, one of the most iconic points of the route, we reach Torridon Hotel.
Hotel owner Dan Rose-Bristow welcomes us with his Porsche 911 Carrera 3.2 Coupé. Charging next to the classic 1989 911, the new Macan Turbo brings together Porsche’s past and future in the same frame.
According to Rose-Bristow, the NC500 has gained great popularity, especially among sports car owners. However, there is an important point he underlines:
“There is no need to press the gas pedal all the way to enjoy these roads.”

Bealach na Bà: The Real Test of Driving
As we reach the Applecross Peninsula, the most famous and challenging section of the North Coast 500 appears: Bealach na Bà.
This mountain road, which means “Cattle Pass” in the Gaelic language, is one of the most impressive driving routes in Europe with its tight bends, steep slopes and breathtaking views.
Macan Turbo’s four-wheel drive system and precise steering responses give the driver great confidence in sharp hairpin bends and narrow passages on the edge of the cliff.

Last Stop: Loch Ness
In the last part of the journey, we reach the shores of Loch Ness, one of the most famous lakes in the world.
Just as the Nessie legend, which emerged in 1933, turned into a global phenomenon over time, the North Coast 500 has quickly become one of the most prestigious driving routes in the world.
But the real beauty of this road is not only in its views.
North Coast 500 brings together the nature, history and people of Scotland in the same story. Porsche Macan Turbo accompanies us silently, powerfully and sustainably as the modern hero of this story.
The result?
The debate about which is the most beautiful driving route in the world can continue. But after experiencing the North Coast 500 in a Porsche Macan Turbo, there is no doubt that Scotland is a very strong candidate in this debate.
