Suzuki’s 42% Scope 1 and 2031 emissions target sets the context for Maruti Suzuki’s growing energy investments in India Maruti Suzuki India has deployed a 1 MW/hour battery energy storage system (BESS) at its Kharhoda manufacturing facility to capture excess electricity from the existing 20 MWp solar installation during periods of low demand and during plant holidays. The system has been integrated into Kharhoda’s domestic electricity distribution network as a pilot initiative. BESS has an estimated operating life of 15 years and is expected to reduce approximately 54 tonnes of CO2 per year while improving grid stability at the site. Hisashi Takeuchi, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Maruti Suzuki India Limited, said in a statement: “Maruti Suzuki is strongly aligned with India’s focus on creating self-reliant energy ecosystems. The introduction of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) at our Kharhoda facility is part of these ongoing efforts. With a life cycle of approximately 15 years, BESS will help reduce CO2 emissions of approximately 54 tonnes per annum.” Takeuchi added: “Going forward, our production volumes will increase from current levels. Despite this, we remain committed to reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions not only in terms of CO2 intensity, but also in terms of absolute CO2 emissions in production. Our approach is in line with the environmental impact of our parent company, Suzuki Motor Corporation, which has set an interim target to reduce Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions by 42% in FY 2030-31 compared to FY 2022-23.” “It is compatible with its vision.”
